Winter Solstice Pet Memorial Ceremonies
December 21st is the Winter Solstice– the longest night of the year, and also the point at which the days start to lengthen again. At St. Francis, we have chosen to use this significant day as a time to honor the pets that we have loved and lost. People don’t always understand how much the loss of a pet can impact our lives. As part of the community that knew your pet, we are honored to create a space for you to remember them alongside others who understand your grief.
Each winter solstice, we gather together at St. Francis to share stories, memories, and a short program of readings to honor our animal companions. By request, we create luminaries to put on display at St. Francis and a slideshow of photos and memories of pets who have been lost. Our memorial slideshows from past years can be viewed below. If you are interested in participating in our in-person ceremonies, we start preparing early in December each year. Watch this space for a link to submit a request for a luminary and/or to have your pet included in our slideshow.
